Marysville Cookbook #28 - Last and Final Post I'm afraid

It's been a while since I've updated this blog.

I've taken the website offline, it's no longer financial viable for me to maintain site. I haven't sold any books for such a long time.

The final list of money raised as at the 12th August 2015 is $9,000.00 and donated back to community groups, from the sale of the Marysville Cookbook, which was created after the devastation of the Victorian Black Saturday Bushfires. The Community groups that have benefited are as follows:-

Noting: At NO POINT in time have I profited from the this venture. The sums are buried here somewhere in this blog, after someone accused me of profiteering.

THE STORY: The Marysville Cookbook was created by me, for the township of Marysville (and surrounds) It was created after someone who is like an aunty to me, lamented the lose of the their mothers jam recipe.

I couldn't replace that recipe, but I could create a cookbook to replace those lost in the fires. Some 5 months later, many sleepless nights and working full-time, I cobbled together the first copy of the Marysville Cookbook and GAVE 300 copies to people within the area known as The Triangle. Not long after people wanted to buy the cookbook, so I did a second run. Thinking how can the township benefit from this, I realised I could donate $10 from the sale of EACH book back to community groups within town. And that's what I did.

I'm not a wordsmith, I'm not a book publisher, I've never published a book before, I didn't even have any help. Everything was self-taught, from the font to use, to the borders, the layouts, who do I get to the printing and even the logistics of unloading the pallet when in arrived on my doorstep with no fork-lift!

I've given over 340 books to people of Marysville and surrounds, some into Kinglake and the rest to CFA units across the state. In total 534 books.

~One person can make a difference it only takes one person to make someone smile.~

As Time Goes by - The Marysville Cookbook (Updated 4th April 2014)

As stated in my previous post - I will be sending the remaining Marysville cookbooks out to various (chosen at random) CFA stations across the state.

As at the 4th April 2014, the following stations have had books mailed out (or recentlyish!) - Only 5 per station, mainly due to postage weights and costs. 5 books = 3kg - which is the satchel weight.

 It is going to take some time to get the remaining books out, I did ask for some assistance with the cost of postage, but unfortunately the Marysville Cookbook does not fit into the sponsorship ideals of Australia Post.

As the cost of postage is $12.75 per package and the packaging is $2.00, it will amount to a considerable sum.

As I have stated throughout the prior 5 years, there was no profit, nor intention of profit and thus the funds will have to be sourced from my own pocket and this will take a little bit of time.

I apologise for the delay to those CFA stations that have been selected at random to receive cookbooks, but they are coming!

I won't name the stations here beforehand, but as the packages go in the mail. I will name in subsequent posts.

For those of you who purchased a copy of the Marysville Cookbook and for those of you involved in the CFA, thank-you for being you and being where you need to be in times of need.

The Marysville Cookbook Update

The Marysville Cookbook has raised a total of $8000 for the Marysville Community over the last 4 years. The town is slowly recovering. As time slips by, so do the horrors of that Saturday, 7th February 2009.

It is with regret I announce the end of the Marysville Cookbook and the funds going back the Marysville and Community.

The last deposit was made to the Marysville Kindergarten tonight, making a total of $8000 raised for Marysville.

It only took one person to make a difference. You too can make a difference to YOUR community. You only have to put your mind to it!

Why I Like the Marysville Cookbook - By Sandy

Hi. My name is Sandy. I met Heather on twitter a long time ago and we became friends. Recently she asked me to review the cookbook and why I liked and it and I bought the book in the first place. So here goes.....

When Heather got the idea to print and publish a recipe book, I was interested. I followed the process for a while and eventually it was ready. A great cause, I thought, and one I wanted to help with. Plus, it couldn't hurt to learn some new ways to cook food. I'm not one of those who is very imaginative with food so I hoped this would help.

 From what I've seen, the entire aim of the book was as a different way to raise some much-needed funds for those who suffered in the Marysville fires of 7th February, 2009. What it seemed she also aimed to do was make cooking easy - even for someone like me who is known for talking, not cooking.

I bought the book, mostly just because I wanted to help with what she was doing. I thought she was such a good person for being so selfless so why not help her out and buy a book? I'm no cook - I'll never use but hey, it's for a great cause.

When it arrived I had a quick flick through it, passed it to my husband for his comments (he's chief cook and bottle-washer at our place) and then to my daughter who hadn't cooked a day in her life (she's 22!!) Hubby agreed it seemed full of good, easy recipes even he could manage. That's a good review for it, I thought. Daughter? She just looked at it and declared she would never use it.

About a week later, I had the urge to try something a little different. My family eats the same sort of meals most nights and, frankly, my daughter and I were bored with them. I went through the recipe book again, properly. What I found was an array of recipes anyone can cook, using ingredients that were not only easy to find in the stores but, a reasonable price, something we usually have in the house anyway so no worrying about the cost most times AND all food my entire family would eat!!

We are pensioners so it isn't easy or cheap to use recipes we find in magazines or most recipe books. I haven't even heard of most of the ingredients used in those much less have whatever it is in the house!! Assuming I could afford them and find them in the store, I doubt my family would even eat it anyway. I don't mind trying new foods but most of those in regular recipes just sound horrible - even I'm not prepared to try them so my family wouldn't touch it.

I found one recipe I thought I'd try - I had EVERY ingredient in the house AND all of them were things my family eats regularly. I started to prepare it all - it took just over five minutes. Even better - I don't like spending an hour or so in the kitchen at any time let alone just for preparation so this was a good start. I put it all together, added a couple of extra ingredients not listed and cooked it - all in about 40 minutes. Fantastic. Cheap, full of good, healthy food, inexpensive AND something that didn't take forever to prepare or cook. The added bonus was the family not only ate it all but went back for seconds - a rarity at my home.

Within a week, the family was asking for another meal from "The Marysville Book". The next time I did something else - again, cheap, uncomplicated, fairly quick to put together and cook, full of goodness and food that even tasted good and not just healthy for us. Again, no time at all to cook, or eat, it. Since then, we've used recipes from the book about once a week - and even my husband has cooked two meals from it (so far). We haven't ruined a meal yet so that shows you what a great book it is. So easy even we can't ruin it!!

Please help a great cause and help Heather to make some much needed (still) funds to help those who need it. It's a great book, a great cause and you can't make a mistake. Please tell your friends, too. The more the merrier and the more funds raised the more the Community of Marysville can benefit from your assistance.

Back to Basics in the Kitchen

How many times have you rifled some or all of you cookbooks, trying to find a use for one ingredient in your fridge and realised that unless the main ingredient is the first word of the recipe title, it doesn't get a mention?

When I created the Marysville Cookbook, I realised that this was one of my bug bears (and no doubt many other peoples!) and created the cookbook accordingly.

All the major ingredients are listed in the index, along with a metric to imperial conversion table, for all types of measuring, for liquid to weight to oven temperatures.

There are even some handy hints for in and around the kitchen, from kids play dough to fixing salty soup and oven door cleaner, even what to do with any wine left-overs! (Yes, that was joke!)

There are no brand names mentioned, all ingredients are back-to-basic type cooking, without the camp fire, in other words, no more slaving over a hot stove and more time with your family. From Slow Cooker recipes to roasts and stews, along with many great desserts and jam recipes, just like nanna used to make.

Sick of buying one ingredient, only to find no other recipe you own, uses that ingredient? All recipes are easy and all ingredients are basic, fresh and family friendly.

Most recipes can be frozen once cooked, which means, no longer having to wait for take-away, when in 20 minutes you can have a meal on the table that is home-made and hot. Saves money too!

Lenovo 10-Sec Hero Competition - The Video

This was the video that I submitted to Lenovo for the 10-Sec Eextraordinary Hero Competition.

I was one of 18 entrants world-wide to be considered to win $50,000 for the community of Marysville. I consider myself lucky to have been chosen, and still consider it a privilege for Marysville Cookbook to have been chosen.

The winner will announced on the 27th October 2011 here Lenovo 10-Sec Hero Competition so watch out, maybe it will be my name up in lights for Marysville!

As at the 17th October 2011, the amount of $4,700 has been raised and give. For the cost of $35AU (inc P&H) you too can help Marysville recover from Bushfire one recipe at a time.
