The Marysville Cookbook Update

The Marysville Cookbook has raised a total of $8000 for the Marysville Community over the last 4 years. The town is slowly recovering. As time slips by, so do the horrors of that Saturday, 7th February 2009.

It is with regret I announce the end of the Marysville Cookbook and the funds going back the Marysville and Community.

The last deposit was made to the Marysville Kindergarten tonight, making a total of $8000 raised for Marysville.

It only took one person to make a difference. You too can make a difference to YOUR community. You only have to put your mind to it!

Why I Like the Marysville Cookbook - By Sandy

Hi. My name is Sandy. I met Heather on twitter a long time ago and we became friends. Recently she asked me to review the cookbook and why I liked and it and I bought the book in the first place. So here goes.....

When Heather got the idea to print and publish a recipe book, I was interested. I followed the process for a while and eventually it was ready. A great cause, I thought, and one I wanted to help with. Plus, it couldn't hurt to learn some new ways to cook food. I'm not one of those who is very imaginative with food so I hoped this would help.

 From what I've seen, the entire aim of the book was as a different way to raise some much-needed funds for those who suffered in the Marysville fires of 7th February, 2009. What it seemed she also aimed to do was make cooking easy - even for someone like me who is known for talking, not cooking.

I bought the book, mostly just because I wanted to help with what she was doing. I thought she was such a good person for being so selfless so why not help her out and buy a book? I'm no cook - I'll never use but hey, it's for a great cause.

When it arrived I had a quick flick through it, passed it to my husband for his comments (he's chief cook and bottle-washer at our place) and then to my daughter who hadn't cooked a day in her life (she's 22!!) Hubby agreed it seemed full of good, easy recipes even he could manage. That's a good review for it, I thought. Daughter? She just looked at it and declared she would never use it.

About a week later, I had the urge to try something a little different. My family eats the same sort of meals most nights and, frankly, my daughter and I were bored with them. I went through the recipe book again, properly. What I found was an array of recipes anyone can cook, using ingredients that were not only easy to find in the stores but, a reasonable price, something we usually have in the house anyway so no worrying about the cost most times AND all food my entire family would eat!!

We are pensioners so it isn't easy or cheap to use recipes we find in magazines or most recipe books. I haven't even heard of most of the ingredients used in those much less have whatever it is in the house!! Assuming I could afford them and find them in the store, I doubt my family would even eat it anyway. I don't mind trying new foods but most of those in regular recipes just sound horrible - even I'm not prepared to try them so my family wouldn't touch it.

I found one recipe I thought I'd try - I had EVERY ingredient in the house AND all of them were things my family eats regularly. I started to prepare it all - it took just over five minutes. Even better - I don't like spending an hour or so in the kitchen at any time let alone just for preparation so this was a good start. I put it all together, added a couple of extra ingredients not listed and cooked it - all in about 40 minutes. Fantastic. Cheap, full of good, healthy food, inexpensive AND something that didn't take forever to prepare or cook. The added bonus was the family not only ate it all but went back for seconds - a rarity at my home.

Within a week, the family was asking for another meal from "The Marysville Book". The next time I did something else - again, cheap, uncomplicated, fairly quick to put together and cook, full of goodness and food that even tasted good and not just healthy for us. Again, no time at all to cook, or eat, it. Since then, we've used recipes from the book about once a week - and even my husband has cooked two meals from it (so far). We haven't ruined a meal yet so that shows you what a great book it is. So easy even we can't ruin it!!

Welcome to the Local History Centre for Marysville and District Historical Society.

~Razed and Raised~

Our old premises were totally destroyed on Black Saturday - along with a lifestyle, an environment and many friends.

The journey back has been difficult to say the least, but the generosity of people from all over Australia and the world has been extraordinary. We wish to acknowledge the assistance of Mr Andrew Mackenzie who collected many artefacts for us and Mr Janet Schultz who as facilitator has enables us to do the alterations to the building bought from Mr Michael Darmody. We were  able to buy the property because of the generosity of an old friend Mrs Yvonne Knight who left the Society a bequest, How grateful we are.

So now we can tell the story.

Our displays follow the patterns of the story which was told in out former premises - Pioneers, Timber, Tourism and Marysville General - e.g. Sport, School, Personalities etc, and the R.S.L. story.

Now - Add to this mix a beautiful Art Gallery - all donated, and an incredible Photographic display in framers pictured and thousands of photographs in albums, cameras, DVDs, CD's etc.

The Melbourne Meccano Club wanted to remember out wonderful Manical Mechanicals shop - hence the super display which is now a permanent addition to our story.

Kitchenalia, a dentists chair, a magnificent library, a bottle collection - all great to see.

Part of the story of Marysville and District now included the events of Black Saturday 2009. We remember those who died and celebrate the renewal of life within our district.

We are here and the 'The story will still be told' - PART, PRESENT AND FUTURE.

We hope you enjoy the story - we all enjoy its telling.

Back to Basics in the Kitchen

How many times have you rifled some or all of you cookbooks, trying to find a use for one ingredient in your fridge and realised that unless the main ingredient is the first word of the recipe title, it doesn't get a mention?

When I created the Marysville Cookbook, I realised that this was one of my bug bears (and no doubt many other peoples!) and created the cookbook accordingly.

All the major ingredients are listed in the index, along with a metric to imperial conversion table, for all types of measuring, for liquid to weight to oven temperatures.

There are even some handy hints for in and around the kitchen, from kids play dough to fixing salty soup and oven door cleaner, even what to do with any wine left-overs! (Yes, that was joke!)

There are no brand names mentioned, all ingredients are back-to-basic type cooking, without the camp fire, in other words, no more slaving over a hot stove and more time with your family. From Slow Cooker recipes to roasts and stews, along with many great desserts and jam recipes, just like nanna used to make.

Sick of buying one ingredient, only to find no other recipe you own, uses that ingredient? All recipes are easy and all ingredients are basic, fresh and family friendly.

Most recipes can be frozen once cooked, which means, no longer having to wait for take-away, when in 20 minutes you can have a meal on the table that is home-made and hot. Saves money too!

Lake Mountain Alpine Resort – or more correctly – SUMMER SPORTS!

(I don't normally discuss other things, but Lake Mountain Green Activities is benefiting the Community and creating employment, so I thought it fit to post here)

In January 2012, I was lucky enough to win tickets (via Facebook) to visit Lake Mountain for their summer activities. Lake Mountain is 30 minutes from Marysville and is known for its skiing, during winter and the rest of the year mainly motorbikes and cyclists, but now you have the opportunity to enjoy Lake Mountain all year round with the introduction of summer activities.

There was live music, activities for young and old, hot coffee or cool drinks depending on the day and the views are amazing. You can do something as simple as enjoying the view and seeing the bushfire devastated area regenerate, whilst listening to live music.

The young children can colour in or play on the HUGE inflated dinosaur wonderland. The older kids can enjoy the flying fox or go with a (licensed) adult in the dune buggies OR all-terrain vehicles, travelling with a guide and getting VERY dirty in the process! Or if you're game enough, there is a circuit JUST for children to enjoy driving their own dune buggy. (suitable for 7yrs and up)

All safety equipment is provided and the fun to be had is fantastic.

Eextraordinary 10-Second Hero Competition (Run by Lenovo)

I would like to say thank-you to everyone who supported and voted for me, during the running of Lenovo Competition and the possibility for Marysville to win $50,000.

Marysville wasn’t chosen as the overall winner, a group using the name of ‘Operation Smiles’ were the final winner.

Congratulations to Operation Smiles, They are a group based in Bogota BC, who help people with Cleft Palettes and gives them their smile back. They are based in Bogotá BC.

One person/One group CAN make a difference as has been proven by the many applicants who have made a difference in their part of the world.

It takes one idea, one person and the rest is history!

My difference has been $4900 (so far) raised for the Marysville Community, the township devastated by the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires.

A treasured cookbook helps Marysville heal, as written by Meagan Weymes

INSIDE Heather Samsa’s kitchen is an old cookbook filled with handwritten recipes, lovingly passed down from her nanna and her mother. The book holds more than just recipes, but memories and knowledge passed down through generations. The importance of the book only struck the Eden Park mother-of-three after the Black Saturday bushfires tore through her home town of Marysville.

Samsa arrived at 5.30am as the fires were still burning, and what she found was devastating. ‘‘Everything was gone. It was just gone. How else can you describe it?’’

It was only after the fires, when a close family friend broke down crying to Samsa because she couldn’t remember her mother’s jam recipe, that she realised she could do something to help. Within four months the Marysville Cookbook was at the printers, filled with the recipes passed down through generations.

‘‘I realised that if I could help one person smile, then that would make all the difference and if I can help one person I could help the town,’’ she says.

The first of the 300 books were handed out as gifts at community meetings, and the rest were distributed over months by Samsa’s parents from boxes in the boot of their car.

Then people started to approach Samsa wanting to buy the book. After a reprint, she created a blog and started promoting the book via Twitter and word of mouth. Since then, 430 copies have been sold, reaching as far as England, Italy, Switzerland and around Australia. For each book sold, $10 is donated to Marysville.

In addition to the recipes, the book has photos of Marysville before the fires. Samsa says it never crossed her mind to add photos of the fires or the affect they had on the town.

‘‘I still can’t look at Marysville without breaking down in tears so instead I just wanted to focus on what was and what can be for the town. People don’t need to be reminded what caused the damage.’’

Years later, Samsa has been recognised after being selected as a finalist in the Lenovo 10-Second Hero competition. The prize for winning the competition is a $50,000 donation. Despite the recognition, Samsa says that was never her intention.

‘‘Most people in Marysville don’t even know I exist; they know who my parents are and some of them have met me but the majority haven’t. So it’s not for personal benefit. It’s not about me, it’s about the town.’’

The next recipient in line is the Marysville Anglican Guild. The Guild used to hold street stalls to raise funds for their community, which has not been possible since the fires. So sales from the Marysville Cookbook have been the only funds they have received.

The ONLY AUSTRALIAN Finalist in the Lenovo 10Second Hero Competition

As the only Australian Finalist in the Lenovo 10 Second Hero Competition, I am rather nervous. Originally I was the ONLY Australian from 24 world-wide, it would appear there has been a further cull and only 18 entrants have made the final cut, with an extra added from Australia, the ONLY Country to have this occur.

There was never any intention of selling the cookbook. But public demand saw otherwise, that’s when I realised I could turn a gift into something bigger and perhaps more helpful for the township of Marysville and surrounding areas. $10 from each and every sale was returned back to Marysville, so far raising $4300 for the town via numerous community groups that you can read about here:- The Money donated and to whom! The Marysville Saddle Tramps are next on the recipient list and only 1 book away from receiving their $200 (as at this post date!)

40hours and counting…. EExtraordinary Lenovo 10Second Hero Competition

The Marysville Cookbook has been selected as the ONLY Australian Finalist in the Lenovo 10Second Hero Competition, a further entrant was added, which is different to the rules stated. (But it's Lenovo's Sandpit!)

I’ve been watching the days and now the hours ticking over faster and faster. It was only Tuesday last week that I found out the Marysville Cookbook had made the finals.

I read and re-read the competition terms, read them again….. and I still can’t believe that the Marysville Cookbook has even managed to reach the finals.

The number of finalists per country are:- United States – 4, Australia – 1 ,Philippines – 1, Malaysia – 1, The United Kingdom – 1, India – 2, Canada – 2, Thailand – 1, Indonesia – 1, Turkey – 2, Poland – 2, The Czech Republic – 1, Germany – 1, Spain – 1, Mexico – 1, Columbia – 1, Argentina – 1

Marysville Cookbook, Lenovo 10Sec Hero Competition & Twitter.

Sometime in late July, early August, @kerrypintado from Twitter sent me a link about the Lenovo 10Sec Hero Competition. I entered the Worldwide competition, which was to win $50,000 for a community/charity of the winners choice. I didn’t think I had any hope of winning.

The rules stated “submit ONE essay that describes how you have or someone you know used 10 seconds to become someone’s hero or how you or someone you know has done a good deed in 10 seconds”

The competition rules said 150 words, so I duly trotted off and in 10 or so minutes, figured something out that would be 150 words, then the frustration started. It turns out it wasn’t 150 words, but 200………….. Took me a while to figure that one out!

I pressed the send button, then promptly forgot about the entry. I mean ONE winner world-wide for $50,000, there would be 100’s of thousands of people from around the world applying, surely?

On Tuesday I received an email telling me that I am A FINALIST. The ONE Australian chosen to show the world what one person can do for one community with one book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW……….

1 of 24……… Who would have thought? I only had 72 hours to put together a short video presentation of no more than 5MB. I reached out to the Twitter Community and hands reached out to help me.

Now the crux of the problem, I had to create video to show off my handy work, for someone who is camera shy and prefers to be behind the books and not on the front cover. I was a little shaken up – By Tuesday night the voice component was done, by Wednesday the whole video was completed and sitting on my desktop.

After re-reading the rules of entry for the competition, I realise that once the video component of the entry has been submitted (and received) I receive a Lenovo laptop computer, just for entering and being a finalist. I was gob-smacked to say the least.

I am about to press the send button on the video submission, wish me luck and come back on the 14th of September for the link that takes you to the voting page. The rules state ONE VOTE per person PER DAY. So don’t ruin it for Marysville.
